🌏What is SOUTHERN?🌏

The Southern Ocean, also known as the Antarctic Ocean, surrounds Antarctica and is the world’s youngest recognized ocean, officially designated in 2000. It connects to the Atlantic, Indian, and Pacific Oceans and is defined by the Antarctic Circumpolar Current (ACC), the strongest ocean current, which flows from west to east around the continent. Covering about 6% of Earth's surface, it plays a crucial role in regulating the planet's climate and heat distribution.

The Southern Ocean is among the coldest and most remote, with icy waters and seasonal sea ice. Despite its harsh conditions, it supports unique wildlife, including penguins, seals, and whales, and is a critical habitat for krill, a key species in the Antarctic food chain. Its waters are also rich in nutrients, supporting a variety of marine life.

This ocean is vital for scientific research, particularly for studying climate change and its impact on ice sheets and sea levels. It is protected under international agreements like the Antarctic Treaty, which focus on preserving its pristine environment while promoting scientific collaboration.
